Statement: UK Supreme Court Ruling

Today, the UK Supreme Court ruled that, under the law, the word “woman” does not include trans women.

Let us be clear: this is not a technicality. This is an act of exclusion. It is a deliberate move to narrow the definition of who gets to belong, who gets to be protected, and who gets to be seen.

At a time when trans people face relentless attacks in our politics, our press, and our public institutions, this ruling is a devastating blow. It undermines the dignity and legal recognition of our trans siblings and sets a dangerous precedent for the erosion of hard-won rights around the world, as we have seen in the USA and Hungary recently.

Queer Theatre exists to amplify LGBTQ+ voices, and today we say, with absolute clarity:

Trans women are women.

Trans men are men.

Non-binary people exist.

And trans rights are human rights.

We implore everyone: allies, artists, audiences, and institutions to speak up. To show up. To show love and stand in unwavering solidarity with our trans siblings, now and always.
